Why good design starts with listening

Before the wireframes, moodboards, or style guides—there’s a much more underrated design tool: listening.

Whether I'm working on a brand refresh or a new product feature, the most valuable insights come not from design trends or inspiration decks, but from conversations. Listening to users. Stakeholders. Developers. Even non-designers who just get the business.

Here's why it matters:
  • It builds empathy.
Listening helps you see the world through someone else's eyes—which is essential for designing things people actually want to use.

  • It saves time.
The better you understand the problem up front, the fewer revisions (and headaches) down the line.

  • It uncovers what’s not being said.
Sometimes the real problem isn’t in the brief—it’s between the lines. Listening carefully can help uncover deeper needs or misaligned expectations.

  • It earns trust.
People want to be heard. When they feel included in the process, collaboration becomes smoother and feedback becomes more meaningful.

Design isn’t just about making things look good—it’s about making things work for people. And that starts by tuning in before you start sketching out solutions.
